PSM Signing in.

May 19, 2008

Well, there had been a significant number of previous blog entries but with the new route comes a new blog and new responsibilities.

This week I will be mostly getting my car MOT’d. No mean feat. It wont pass, but once I know exactly how many varied and wonderful ways it has failed I can get cracking, get it passed, then get modifying!

Other challenges for the week are sending off for a Syrian visa and starting the carnet process (maybe, depending on what we find out about Egypt).

Stay tuned for disasterous consequences and total system failure.

More dismantling.

Stripped some old stodgy brake lines away today, and located the kind of goo normally found in bad sci-fi movies. We kept it because it may work as fuel. Took measurements of the back spring hangers, there’ll be some new ones of those made soon. Looked and laughed at the wiring. Hoping for a full 5 day assault on Humphrey the mighty rally car starting tomorrow. 5 am coffee alarm set.

Raising the suspension

May 17, 2008

Raised the Mogs suspension with a combination of brute force, crafty leverage and gallon of WD40. Copper greased everything so it’ll come off handy if need be. Replaced a crossover brake line on one hub and gave the whole car a good thick brush painted coat of matt white undercoat. Apparently matt white reflects the most amount of light, even more than shiny white….suits me

Stripping the Mog interior

May 17, 2008

Stripped out the cars interior and vacuumed up 6.3 metric tonnes of sand, dust and old coins (none valuable unfortunately. Funny cos we’ll be filling the car with dust again soon, and maybe a camel or two. Ran the fuel line and wiring loom inside the cab so it won’t get knocked off by bottoming out the car.

Mog surgery

May 17, 2008

Chopped off both wings and removed the bonnet to make access easier to all the tricky bits up front. We’re going to fit the wings back on with easy to get at bolts in so we can pull them off to inspect damage and conduct repairs. Plated both inner arches where 44 years of corrosion and tinworm were at work. Used 2mm steel plate because these points are going to get a 6000 mile sandblasting in the near future. I don’t do fibreglass and filler.
